Couple’s Work

In the work we start by orientating to what each person feels and believes about the relationship, before coming to the space of shared inquiry in the relationship and to inquire into the shared dilemmas and needs you both have.

Bringing awareness to the body can again be helpful here, particularly to help deepen into the work when couples may be going ‘to the edge’ in expressing a truth that feels risky to name. What gets in the way of couple’s really bringing themselves and clarifying their needs often relates to a lack of trust, and so a fuller exploration of this can be helpful. This process may take time, and requires a commitment to the process.

Another aspect of couples work involves developing more empowered ways of communicating including owning one’s experience and not speaking for one’s partner. This can support inquiry into where healthy boundaries may be and supports authentic relating with the aim of disentangling unhelpful relationship dynamics.

Some of the work may involve separate sessions if this is needed and at other times space can be given to explore issues arising from partner’s personal history and how this influences the way they may be in the relationship.

Experience

Intimate relationships are a challenging area of life, and my own experience leaves me with deep respect for this work and humility of how each person’s relationship is unique and particular. I meet you with warmth, openness and curisoity to help you move forward. Listening and active curiosity are central to this process.

Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, I spent 15 years in children and Families social work. This included facilitating difficult conversations and mediating conflict, much of which involved couples. This, combined with my own life experience and interest in authentic relating in group work informs my approach.
